It was one of the happiest days in my life’ – Arsenal’s longest-serving player, Mohamed Elneny, broke down in ‘tears’ after Gunners handed him new deal in offseason

Mohamed Elneny revealed he broke down in tears when Arsenal offered him a one-year contract extension earlier this year

-Elneny cried after Arsenal offered a new deal
-Club’s longest-serving player right now
-Appeared in a Carabao Cup game this season

The Egyptian midfielder was sidelined for nine months following surgery on a knee injury in January. At one point Elneny – who is the longest-serving Arsenal player in the current squad – was convinced that his time in north London was up as his contract was due to expire at the end of the 2022/23 season. But the Gunners surprised him with a new deal earlier in February which made the 31-year-old star extremely emotional.

Speaking to Evening Standard, Elneny said, “It was one of the happiest days in my life. The way they spoke to me, the way the entire club was happy about this decision, they made me cry that day. Arsenal football club, they know I love them 100 per cent, so much. They know I don’t want to leave. I want to stay and finish my career there, 100 per cent.

“I was injured and my contract was finishing and I could not play anymore last season, and they came straight away after I got injured, the next day and said: ‘Mo, what sort of contract will it have to be? We love you here and we and we want you to stay’. Really, this club is great.”

Elneny began his senior career in the Egyptian Premier League, before moving to Swiss club Basel in January 2013. He won eight honours at Basel, including the Swiss Super League in each of his four seasons. In January 2016, he was transferred to Arsenal.

Elneny competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics for the Egyptian under-23 team, and played for the senior team at the 2017, 2019 and 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, as well as the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Although the club are in the middle of the best run of form since March and subsequently since the new manager’s arrival at Stamford Bridge, the issues continue to mount. After making it quite clear, if it wasn’t already obvious, that he hoped to use the fornight away from club football to help his players recover from injury and prepare for what is a treacherous set of upcoming fixtures, the opposite has happened. Despite working with Marc Cucurella, Rob Sanchez and Raheem Sterling amongst others at Cobham due to being left out by their countries, Pochttino problems and dilemmas have grown. In Reece James and Carney Chukwuemeka Pochettino had two bodies he had been ready to intergrate back into first team proceedings. The latter upped his workload and was even on the bench against Burnley, the first time he has been seen in a matchday squad since the second weekend of the season. Chukwuemeka has now been dealt another setback with Nathan Gissing reporting that he has suffered knee pain once more. The 19-year-old has been out with a knee problem, one of many in the Chelsea squad with such an issue. James, on the other hand, hasn’t played since the opening weekend of the campaign at home to Liverpool and had been thought to be close to making an appearance before the break but was suspensed for the trip to Turf Moor. What has followed for him during the break is more frustration.
